Glossary of Website Terms- Website Creation's "Glossary of Terms" provides potential website owners with the terms and information they need to get started in creating a personal or business website. In setting up a website, users need a website design, domain name and a web hosting provider. Once users have a clear understanding of these terms, then they can proceed to the next section. Understanding Web Hosting: Web hosting is an online storage service for any content displayed or accessed through your Web site. Web hosting is the technology that gets your website online. It's one of the three required items you'll need to establish yourself on the Web: a domain name, a website, and a web host. Your domain name tells people where to find you, your Web site is viewed by your visitors, and hosting makes your site part of the Internet. The web host is the person or company that takes your designed website and makes it available at the domain address (www.) you have chosen. When selecting a web host there are several important things to consider. Read "Selecting a Web Host" for a comprehensive guide of what to look for in a web host. Google "web hosting" in our search box for a complete list of web hosts. Choosing the Domain Name: Your domain name is your website's address on the web. When you type in an address or URL in a web browser, you are taken the the website that is attached to that domain name. In the modern world of the Internet, where people automatically turn to the Web for information, it pays to have a domain name that reflects your website or business. There are just fewer things for your customers or visitors to remember. Naming a website after its domain name is important, for the simple reason that when people think of your website, they'll think of it by name. If your name is also your URL, they'll automatically know where to go. It's important to check availability of domain names and purchase the name as soon as possible, especially if the domain name may affect the name of your website. It is also possible to purchase more than one domain name for the same site. One domain name will be the address of your actual website and other domain names can be "parked". If you type in a parked domain name you will be redirected to the URL where the website is located. For example if you type in http://www.michaelarnoldart.com or http://www.simplyartonline.net you will end up at the same place (Simply Art). Since domain names may be purchased as cheaply as $10 a year many webmasters choose to purchase multiple domain names to increase the probability of someone finding their website. Keywords and Keyword Density: As soon as you you begin talking about creating a website, you will begin to hear about keywords. Put simply a keyword is a term that captures the essence of the topic of a web site or page. The keywords in your web pages are counted and indexed by search engines and used to direct people to your website. Read our full page on keywords and keyword density for a complete explanation of key words and why they are so important. Key words are the key to getting Google and other search engines to send people to your website! |
